Protection against corrosion of iron and steel, the most rational and definitive solution method for the material is hot-dip galvanizing.
Iron and steel materials when they are influenced by atmospheric conditions, they are correded by losing in the physical, chemical, electrical and other properties . This chang is called also "the metal rust". Rust is not only a visual effect, it is also a chemical reaction which is eroding metal. Also rust, caused by the large volume than metal approximately 30 times, rusted metal elements in the environment also tend to explode. Protective methods are applied to metal surfaces for avoiding metal corrosion from external factors. Some of these protective techniques are paint, plastic, nickel, chromium, copper, and zinc coating. However, among all the galvanized coating method is the most reliable and long lasting one is Zinc Coating (galvanized). Zinc Coating (galvanized) method advantages compared to other methods can be considered as follows:
- Creates a thick and high uniform surface film, the critical point that can not be reached by other methods (internal volume, sharp corners, cutting areas, the surface of the holes, gaps), etc.. would be preserved.
- Other methods are very sensitive to minor injuries and general corrosions are occuring with this injury. Galvanized coating is resistant to scratches, and even it has the self-repairing features. This is called "self-healing effect" and "cathodic protection" For the same reason, hot-dipped galvanized coated surfaces are protected against shock action.
- Creates a metallurgical bond with the zinc-coated materials and materials that protects metal from external influences
- Galvanizing is one of the most long-lasting method among coating method and require no maintenance.
- Looks visually nice. Bright and early appearance of two-dimensional crystals of the coating surface, than getting dull gray matte surface.
- Is an economical method.
However, there are disadvantages of hot-dip galvanizing:
- Sıcak daldırma galvaniz yöntemi ile kaplanmış metallerin onarılması ve tamiri mümkün değildir, parçanın tadilat/ onarımdan sonra bir tüm olarak tekrar galvanizlenmesi gerekir.
- It must be galvanized one by one of the parts, galvanizing after assembly is not a healthy way, parts must be removed first to be galvanized, after the procedure parts must be fitted.
- Some geometry like tanks with small openings is not available for hot-dip galvanizing, the manufacturers need to know products will be protected by hot dip galvanizing after manufacture .
- Hot-dip galvanized organization is an expensive and not common the method and may create logistical problems.
Boats, anchors, chains and some tanks are coated with hot dip galvanized. Classic boats, shroud legs, a series of boom and fittings and other components are protected with hot-dip galvanized. YachtWORKS, TS-914, DIN 50976 standard recommending and the application of this coating method . Ferrous material being shaped received its final form by dipping into melted zinc bath, having on the surface corrosion protective coating of the zinc-iron alloy.
